Abstract

A pin-on-disk and a rod-in-bush apparatus were used to investigate the seizure mechanism of sliding components. Sliding was conducted in a dry condition in room air until the sliding components seized. X-ray micro analysis was made in the vertical section of the seized elements after the sliding system was stopped by the seizure. It was found that very high friction leading to seizure is the result of bonding of the rubbing elements by the transfer particles generated through the mutual transfer and growth process of wear particles. The particles are large and flattened and they form adhesive links between the rubbing components. Experimental results indicated that the seizure is not inherent to direct contact of the mating surfaces but is a result of the formation process of wear particles.
