Abstract

For more than 25 years the Federal Institute of Hydrology has been investigating the impact of large-scale river training of waterways on flood behaviour by means of mathematical modelling and evaluations of gauge station recordings. At the rivers and river reaches of the Upper Rhine, Moselle and Saar, river training had considerable effects, which must be analysed individually according to the distinctive character of works carried out. At the Moselle and the upper Rhine the changes in flood behaviour can be proved by respective measuring results. The purpose of this article is to work out the coherence between cause and effect of these changes more clearly.
