Abstract
Digital twins have reached the pharmaceutical industry through the recent development of Pharma 4.0, and they have the potential to greatly improve the drug development process through their modelling capabilities. The objective of this paper is to determine where digital twins have been implemented thus far and determine any future benefits that have been identified through this research. A scoping review was conducted on PubMed.com using a Boolean string of Mesh terms. Once the papers were identified, 6 mapping questions were answered to extract details from the selected publications and determine the trends and areas where digital twin implementation has occurred. A total of 9 publications were selected after multiple screening rounds. Most of the papers focused on the creation of models that enhance the manufacturing process. In the future, the ability to enhance clinical trials and the drug target discovery process was identified. Overall, digital twins can enhance a range of processes and phases in the drug development process.
