The Elastic Constants of Corrugated Board Panels

Abstract

Because corrugated board panels inevitably contain various processing- induced geometrical imperfections, to develop simple and yet reliable methods for measuring the elastic properties of orthotropic corrugated board panels is not only vitally important for the packaging industry, but also key for any analytical/numerical modeling of the deformation and failure behavior of the corrugated products. This paper focuses on developing and applying the Chladni-pattern based vibration testing method for corrugated panels. To ensure that the measured data from the non-destructive Chladni-pattern method are accurate, the elastic properties measured from traditional mechanical testing methods—lateral compression, three-point bending, and simple shear (including both singleand double-lap shear)—and predicted by the finite element method are presented and compared. Four different types of commercially available corrugated board are examined. It is found that the vibration testing method is ideal for quality control of the boards during manufacturing.
