1. One approach (Ref. 1-5) i s t o identify the discrete or Iumped parameter model of the system. The other approach (Refs. 6-9) i s to identify the distributed model i.e., the partial differential equation along with the boundary conditions. I n this paper we adopt the first approach. Here, we first formulate a forced response problem t o identify the mass, damping and stiffness matrices. The free resDonse Droblem based on this formulation degenerates to the method discussed i n Ref. (1). The methods proposed i n this paper require the measurements of acceleration, velocity and displacement at various locations of the system. The unknown parameters are recovered through a standard least squares procedure 10. Numerical examples t o illustrate the concepts are also presented.
