Abstract
Practical Nitriding and Ferritic Nitrocarburizing addresses many questions that arise when using nitriding and nitrocarburizing processes to case harden engineered components. It describes the basic chemistry of each process and its effect on the metallurgy and microstructure of different grades of iron and steel. It explains how the processes and their variants are implemented and how to set up, monitor, and control process equipment to meet specific design objectives. It discusses the factors that must be considered when selecting materials and determining parameters related to surface hardness, case depth, compound zone thickness, corrosion and wear resistance, distortion, and other such variables. It also explains how materials should be prepared and handled before and after processing, how to examine and evaluate results, and how to diagnose and fix problems.
