Abstract

Uses of herbal drugs play a vital role in the treatment of various diseases. There is evidence that the constituents of a local plant Pisonia grandis R.Br. have several medicinal properties. Recently much attention has been paid on the anti-oxidant, anti-tumor and anti-rheumatic activity of plant leaf extract constituents. In the present study, the ethanolic extract of Pisonia grandis R.Br. leaf extract was tested for its antioxidant activities such as Superoxide dismutase, Glutathione –S- transferase, Polyphenol oxidase, DPPH, Superoxide scavenging activity, Lipid peroxidase, Catalase and Ferric reducing power. The extract was allowed for evaluating Anti- arthritic activity on formaldehyde induced albino rats and they were compared with control and standard. Significant antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract of Pisonia grandis R.Br. leaf was found which may be due to the presence of phytochemicals present in the extract. From the results of pharmacological studies, we were observed that the ethanolic extracts of Pisonia grandis R.Br. showed dose dependent and significant for Anti – arthritic activity in albino rats. The Anti–arthritic activity of the plant extracts of Pisonia grandis R.Br were owing to the presence of its one or more phytoconstituents which may reduce the Rheumatism (particularly allantoin compound). These results after pharmacological evidence and support on the folkloric use of Pisonia grandis R.Br leaves as an Anti – arthritic agent.
