Abstract
The literature regarding the emotional and behavioural difficulties of children with hearing impairments is reviewed. While the studies published from the 1970s onwards have varied widely in their findings, they have generally pointed to elevated rates of psychological disturbance in this group. Factors associated with these difficulties include family environment and mother-child relationship, school environment and within-child variables. Methodological limitations of the current evidence base are considered. Finally, it is proposed that a unifying conceptual model is required to facilitate hypothesis testing in this field.
