Abstract

All individuals are responsible for carrying out the tasks that they have put into their lives. However, the challenges to carry out their responsibilities can lead individuals to the behavior of postponing their responsibilities, such as the perception the individual and a decline in motivation. Within the scope of the research, it is aimed to reveal the academic procrastination behavior tendencies of the students who continue their education at the postgraduate level at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University by taking into account the variables of self-esteem and motivation. As a result of the data obtained by the quantitative research method from a total of 128 participants, 101 of whom were master’s and 27 were Ph.D. students, it was determined that self-esteem and intrinsic motivation, which is a sub-dimension of motivation, have a significant and negative relationship with a tendency to academic procrastination. According to the findings obtained from the research, it was concluded that the tendency to procrastination differed between education levels. It is thought that individual or group-oriented guidance studies will be effective in order to increase the self-esteem of postgraduate students. In addition to the time management, communication, and group Dynamics activities to be carried out in university institutes, it is foreseen that the intrinsic motivation of postgraduate students will be supported and the tendency to procrastination academically be reduced with the encouragement of the advisors.
