Abstract

The Gram-negative bacteriumBordetella pertussiscauses a respiratory disease called whooping cough, or pertussis. This disease is characterized by paroxysmal coughing, the mechanism of which has not been intensively studied because of a lack of versatile animal models that reproduce the cough.
