Abstract
Measurements have been made on the steady-state rates of compressive creep of graphite in the temperature range 2270 to 2780°K. Creep to failure was observed to occur in one of two ways; three out of seventeen samples exhibited a third stage of creep before failure occurred, the remaining fourteen samples failed in a manner analogous to that observed for graphite in tension, that is fracture without the appearance of a third stage. All the latter type creep data are correlated by a classical rate equation of the form: rate=K(σ/σB)n exp(−E/RT).
