1. Discussion Predilection for limbic structures is the most characteristic feature of herpes simplex encephalitis. This site is also preferentially affected in Wernicke's encephalopathy, a subgroup of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and in some cases of systemic malignancy. In the latter, however, other parts of the neuraxis are usually involved. Only four cases of "pure" paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis (PLE) have been reported in the literature since 1960.
