Abstract

The relationship of pressure to flow was studied in the coronary vascular bed of the dog heart. This was accomplished by shunting the blood around the heart and lungs, clamping the arch of the aorta and perfusing arterial blood at known rates into the ascending aorta. Various relationships were observed. Calculated resistance almost always decreased as flow was raised from 25 to 75 ml/min. However resistance decreased, remained constant or increased when flow was increased over the range 75–220 ml/min. An increasing resistance was encountered both in fibrillating hearts and in beating hearts with low initial resistance to flow.
