Abstract
Cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs), such as pacemakers and implantable cardiac defibrillators, are an increasing popular treatment for arrhythmias. Patients with CIEDs are likely to appear in many clinical areas, with pacemakers being the most common type. As healthcare support workers are likely to find these patients in their care, it is vital that they understand the reasons why CIEDs are implanted and how to prepare/care for them. This article will cover the conduction system of the heart and introduce the most common types of CIED. The article also explores how the healthcare assistant and assistant practitioner can support senior staff in preparation, post procedural and community care.
