Abstract
AbstractThe authors present the case of a late neolithic skull (14C dating: 1940 calBC) found 1921 at Bölkendorf, 60 km north-easterly of Berlin. It shows a left frontal trephination (53 x 50 mm) and additionally a left temporo-occipital depressed skull fracture (both survived). Microscopic and 3D-CT analyses strongly suggest that the trephination has been performed for medical purposes.
