A recent overview of plasticity of the brain based on animal model studies and human brain research. The overview is based on the conceptual model of allostasis and allostatic load (see reference 3), in which the brain is the central organ of stress and adaptation and regulates and responds to stress hormones and other stress mediators.

A key paper that showed reversible stress-induced plasticity of the PFC along with the resultant stress-induced behavioural deficits in an animal model. This paper led to a study in humans (reference 115) that showed stress-induced disruption of PFC processing and attentional control.
