Abstract

The HOX(Homeobox) genes encode a family of transcription factors containing Homeobox domains that control cell characteristics along the embryonic axis and coordinate the overall development of the organism.HOXA5 (Homeobox A5) is a member of the HOX family and is a key factor in regulating embryonic development and adult stem cell differentiation. Although HOXA5 has been reported to have a clear relationship with the occurrence and development of many diseases, the biological reasons behind this remain unclear. Here, we review the basic biology of HOXA5 and the role of HOXA5 in non-tumor and oncological diseases. We further explore how HOXA5 regulates disease progression through its effects on cell proliferation, invasion, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and epithelial-interstitial transformation. Finally, we discussed the potential to improve clinical outcomes using HOXA5 biology.
