Abstract
The systematic construction of graphite structures (for example see Figure and Cover picture) is within reach. These structures are formed accidentally on the surface of HOPG graphite due to the friction exerted by the tip of an atomic force microscope but could also be designed “to order”. The origin of the structures and various approaches for their design are discussed. magnified image
