Abstract
The plastic deformations in orthogonal and oblique cutting processes are so large that they cannot be analysed like the small strains in linear elasticity. The deformation due to orthogonal cutting is represented by a two-by-two matrix and that due to oblique cutting by a three-by-three one. Oblique cutting is analysed as orthogonal cutting with a transverse movement of the tool, and the relation between the direction of chip flow, the deformation and the cutting ratio is deduced. The implications of Merchant's theory and Stabler's flow rule are examined in the light of the analysis presented.
