Emission from Electronically Excited C2

Abstract

Chemiluminescence attributable to the Swan, Phillips, and Ballik–Ramsay bands of C2 was observed when halomethanes of the form CH2−nX2+n (X = Cl, Br, I) were introduced into a stream of hydrogen atoms. The relative population of the ν′ = 0 levels of the A3Πg, b1Πu and A′ 3∑g− states are 10:400:1000 with the total rate of formation into all three states being approximately equal.
