Abstract
The preparation of amorphous alloys of CdTe by vacuum deposition and the effects on the resulting films of using different sources are described. When using a flash evaporation source, it is shown that the source material must contain ~10% excess cadmium by weight to produce a purely amorphous film with a near-stoichiometric ratio of Cd to Te. Optical measurements on Cd and Te alloys are presented together with some Seebeck and conductivity data, with special emphasis on near-stoichiometric amorphous CdTe and a partial band diagram is given for this latter material.
