Abstract

Superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) is life-threatening for those with a history of malignancy. Here, we report a case of SVCS with a history of lung adenocarcinoma. Significant neck edema was observed during the physical examination. Venography revealed an occlusive thrombus of the right jugular vein. Catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) was performed with a 12-h infusion of alteplase at 1 mg/h. Over the next 20 h, the patient’s clinical condition significantly improved, and a venogram showed that the thrombus had totally resolved. In individuals with a history of cancer, the identification of signs and symptoms is very important for the diagnosis of SVCS. In patients with clinical SVCS symptoms, CDT can be effective and safe.
