Abstract

The term metaverse originated from the “Snow Crash” novel by Neal Stephenson in 1992. The term underwent massive evolution from a speculative concept into an immersive digital ecosystem. Technological advancement unveils the metaverse's potential in shaping the digital future more transformative and promising. The rapid growth of the metaverse extends beyond social interaction and entertainment. Metaverse has started contributing to education, commerce, and professional collaboration. The scope of this chapter is to provide a secondary analysis of the influence of metaverse in individual's lives and societal structures, using the embodied social presence theory and relying on key thematic areas (access and adoption; wellbeing; diversity and inclusion; sustainability; and empowerment) discussed by the World Economic Forum.
