Abstract
AbstractGiven the typical length of admission young people hospitalised at the Walker Unit may spend somewhere in the vicinity of 3–5% of their current lifespan living in the facility. It is imperative therefore that the admission affords the opportunity for engagement in a developmentally appropriate therapeutic programme, while at the same time maintaining safety. Patient mix, including phase of recovery, has an important impact on the ward milieu. Safety is maintained through observation and engagement. A level system the young people have helped design promotes and rewards skill development and prosocial behaviour. The chapter will describe the strategies the Walker Unit uses to maintain safety while at the same time addressing adolescent needs such as access to social media, interaction with peers, and sexual safety.
